How Much Do Plantation Shutters Cost?

Deluxe Shutters & Blinds • Jan 23, 2022

There are several factors you need to consider when choosing window coverings for your home. Some of these factors include colour, features, aesthetics and, most importantly, cost.

Plantation shutters are a popular choice among Australian homeowners, owing to their excellent light control capabilities and durability. Understanding the cost-affecting factors involved in plantation shutters helps you make a more informed decision when redecorating your home.

Find out how much plantation shutters cost and what factors can affect their price in this blog.

How much do plantation shutters cost?

The average cost for plantation shutter installations in Australia ranges between $2,200 to $3,600. However, some retailers prefer to determine costs per square foot or metre. You can expect to pay around $20 per square foot or $350 per square metre at a minimum in these instances.

You can use this information to determine the cost of plantation shutter installations on a standard window. For instance, if you take a window of 1500mm width x 1000mm length to be the standard window size, you’re looking at costs of around $900 to $1,100 depending on what material you choose.

Plantation shutter cost-affecting factors

There are numerous factors that affect the cost of plantation shutters and some of these include:

1. Material

Plantation shutters come in a variety of different materials – such as aluminium, PVC, natural timber, and basswood. Aluminium and PVC are the most inexpensive options. This is because basswood and natural timber shutters contain organic materials that are more costly to cultivate.

It’s important to note that there are barely any noticeable differences between basswood and PVC shutters – meaning you can save money on an alternative option. Both aluminium and PVC shutters are durable window solutions and function well in humid atmospheres.

As a general guide, homeowners can expect to pay around $700 per square metre for timber plantation shutters and approximately $600 per square metre for PVC plantation shutters.

2. Installation

Having your plantation shutters installed by a professional comes with a higher up-front cost than if you decide to install them yourself. However, you may also have to purchase some tools and materials to do the job correctly. If you make a mistake, you may have to pay even more on reparations. For these reasons, many homeowners choose to hire professionals to avoid incurring extra costs and save time.

3. Window size

Homeowners can expect to pay around the average price for standard-sized window installations. However, windows that have unusual dimensions or unique designs may come at an additional charge.

Some windows that may incur extra costs include skylights and bay windows. This is because plantation shutters are more complicated to manufacture and install for these window types.

4. Designs

There are several types of plantation shutters on the market and which one you choose affects the pricing. Some typical designs include fixed shutters, bi-fold shutters, sliding shutters, and hinged shutters.

Also, whether you opt for a recess fit or face fit for your plantation shutters can also impact prices. Otherwise known as an inside mount, a recess fit occurs when a plantation shutter is manufactured to fit within the frame or recess of a window.

Alternatively, a face fit or outside mount is when the shutter is manufactured to fit outside the recess by instead attaching to the wall around the window. A face fit is more likely to increase the overall cost of your plantation shutter.

5. Finish

The finish that you choose for your plantation shutters is going to impact the overall cost. We understand that you want your plantation shutters to look good, but it's important to also think carefully about their longevity - a more durable finish will save you money in the long run. Painted finishes are generally cost-effective and often the most popular.

They can also be easily repainted if needed, which makes them ideal if you're going to want to change the colour of them in the future. A stained finish is also popular for timber plantation shutters, allowing the natural grain of the timber to shine through. However, it's important to note that a stained finish can be more expensive and will need regular maintenance.

6. Colours

Many people don’t know that the colour they choose for their plantation shutters can end up impacting the overall price as well. If you opt for a traditional colour such as white, you likely won’t pay more than you were expecting, however, if you choose a custom colour, the price could increase by as much as $500.

This increase in price accounts for the fact that the colour will need to be created first before it's applied to your plantation shutters, which takes more time and resources. Some plantation shutters, such as those made of PVC, aren’t able to be custom coloured and are only available in several standard colours, so you'll find these are generally cheaper.

7. Shape

If you require custom plantation shutters, you can expect to pay more than for traditional or standard shaped shutters. Custom windows such as bay windows or corner windows will require specialised designs which take longer to create and install, which is going to drive up the costs. If you require custom plantation shutters, you should budget for an extra $40 to $200 per m2 extra.

8. Blade Size

The blade size of your shutters is also going to impact your overall price. Standard blade sizes are available in widths of 64 mm and 89 mm. Typically, the wider the blade size, the more expensive your shutters are going to end up being. Most customers settle for 64 mm, but those with high ceilings may prefer the overall finish of 89 mm shutters.

It's possible to get custom blades, especially if you have a large room and you want to be able to enjoy the view through the wider opening of the blades, but you will inevitably pay more for these.

9. Fit

When it comes to installing your plantation shutters, you're going to have a choice between recess fit or face fit. A recess fit (or inside mount) is when the shutters are fitted within the frame of the window, providing a sleek look.

A face fit (or outside mount) is when your plantation shutters are attached to the wall around the window and are fitted outside of the recess. They encompass the entire window and a small portion of the wall as well. As such, outside-mounted plantation shutters are slightly more expensive than inside-mounted shutters.
